How to Install Kodi on Windows

eVqUfkjIXUM.jpg

Updated September 2026. This is a straightforward way to install Kodi on a Windows PC without relying on third-party download sites or “fully loaded” installers. Kodi lists v21.3 Omega as the recommended stable Windows release; development builds are for testing.

Before you start

Use a supported Windows PC and sign in with an account allowed to install applications. Kodi’s Windows requirements page lists Windows 10 as the minimum and Windows 11 as recommended for its current guidance. Check available storage and update your graphics driver if video playback has been unreliable.

Install Kodi from the official site

  1. Open the official Kodi Windows download page.
  2. Choose Recommended, not Prerelease or Development Builds, unless you are deliberately testing an upcoming version.
  3. Choose the 64-bit installer for a 64-bit Windows PC; use the 32-bit option only if your Windows installation requires it. You can also choose the Microsoft Store version if you prefer Store-managed updates.
  4. Run the downloaded installer, review the prompts, and launch Kodi from the Start menu.

The official Kodi installation guide describes both the installer and Microsoft Store methods. Downloading from Kodi or the Store helps you avoid modified installers.

Add your own media

Kodi opens without movies or TV channels. Add video or music that you own or are authorized to use from local storage or a network share. The Kodi download page explicitly says the official app contains no content. Do not expect a fresh install to include streaming services automatically.

Updating an existing installation

Before a major upgrade, back up your Kodi settings and library. The official guide explains that the Windows installer and Store version keep their data in different locations; do not delete a data folder while troubleshooting unless you have a backup. If you already use Kodi 21, install the current stable release over your existing installation and test your add-ons and media afterwards.

If installation or playback fails

  • Confirm the download came from Kodi’s official Windows page and matches your system architecture.
  • If Windows SmartScreen warns about a new installer, verify the download source before proceeding. Do not permanently disable Windows security features just to install an app.
  • If a video stalls after installation, use our Kodi buffering troubleshooting guide to separate source, network and cache issues.
